Heading north from Patong Beach the road begins to rise gently leading up to Kalim and Kamala beaches. Whilst the beaches themselves are essentially connected Kalim Beach differs in that it has rock outcrops with quite a bit of coral in the area, making it unsuitable for water sports or swimming. That's the bad news, the good news is that it's not nearly as crowded making it great for a romantic walk or quiet reflection (and don't forget Patong is just a couple minutes away if you want the beach scene). Hotels in Kalim are perched atop the incline, providing spectacular views however do not have direct access to the beach.

Continuing north 8 km brings you to Kamala. Once a sleepy little fishing village, Kamala has, over the last few years, come alive with upscale hotel and villa developments but is still relatively quiet. Kamala has the second largest beach on Phuket, however it too has quite a bit of coral just offshore that, together with a strong undercurrent, make it difficult for swimming and water sports. Nonetheless it is fine for sunbathing, scuba diving & snorkeling. Whilst not as secluded or exclusive as Bang Tao, Kamala is well suited for those looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday. FYI, in order to remain objective, hotels are listed in alphabetical order. We don't favor any hotel for any reason.
